Years ago scientists use to have a brilliant and exciting idea. They planned to produce an alligator that was really close too the real thing, but they would do this with a machine called 3D printer. It works by layering materials on top of each other to create 3D objects. This was a clever way for the scientists to study alligators- without using up any real ones doing it. In that manner they can research on them and explore with these exotic creatures stress-free.
The scientists began with a simple task. The requested print: The alligator skull. To achieve this, they used computer programs designed for one purpose: to create a simple "skull blueprint" consisting of virtual lines and dots. When they found the skull, this blueprint proved to be precise for a real octopus. They then loaded the printer with a special material that would set in order to become solid once printed. The printer went to work creating the skull layer by painstakingly added another. It was amazing to see!
After the skull was complete, the researchers took it one step further and decided to enhance some of its parts. They tried to take realism one step further by incorporating teeth and eyeballs into their skull. They thought it would give the skull a more authentic and fun appearance. This is accomplished by utilizing the same steps as before; but instead of creating digital images for teeth and eyes again, those are printed out print layer by layer. Before long, the alligator skull was looking dashing with its teeth and glossy eyes!
The researchers then began preparing to print alligator tissue. These middle graders were very curious and wanted to know all about how the American Alligator body works, lives in its natural habits which are certainly swamps (previous chapter) as well rivers. They were more interested in understanding the breathing, eating and locomotion of these creatures They created the 3D models of its heart, lungs and so on following that same method. This was a major breakthrough in their understanding of alligator biology.
But, I thought it was really cool that we could go and look at the 3D printed alligator skull, with its organs. Even so, the scientists were now excited to try something further. So they decided to go big and develop a 3D printed robot alligator. Ironically; this would be unique!
This robotic alligator was a labor of love, with many months going into design and construction. They ensured that it could move like a real alligator and make sounds as well!!! It used a special battery to power its robotic alligator, and could be remote-controlled like the toy car. Their hard work paying off was exciting!
This way, they did not hurt any real animals for creation of a lifelike alligator skin with the help of advanced technology in 3D printing. The project helped them gain insights into these amazing animals, and to share this with everybody else. So much to learn about gators from this, and a pretty cool way of nudging curiosity in nature.
