N3twork: How DLP is getting shit done for 3D Printing
So, you might be wondering how does normal 3D printing work? The traditional concept of 3D printing is to melt plastic (or other materials) and stack them, layer by layer until it forms a full-fledged object in three dimensions via the bottom-up method. It may take a moment, but it works. However, this is slightly different and interesting in case of DLP!
Basically, a computer gives you what will amount to the digital equivalent of a photograph or 3D model of whatever it is that you want print in physical form. So you can sketch anything on the computer first. So instead of using melted plastic, a specially designed projector shines light on to some special liquid resin. It is this resin that forms the object printedこれが印刷されたオブジェクト
That is the exciting bit: a laser solidifies the resin into each layer of your object! DLP can produce very high-resolution objects, because the light is capable of moving in a way to create even small details with great accuracy. It’s like magic! Now, the cool thing is that since DLP cures an entire layer at once instead of by a software controlled motion it can (and will) be much faster to print than traditional 3D printing. Thus, we can produced them much quicker!
DLP is great, in part because of the razor sharp surface details it can produce on printed parts. DLP is different from traditional 3D printing, you can even see a little bit of the layers up one on top of another sometimes and other times it may not look like that at all — instead almost appearing to be an object with mold or machine-made perfection. That makes the finished product look a lot nicer!
Another great thing about DLP is that it can produce strong and sturdy objects. The DLP printing material is a resin which can be blended with other materials to enhance harder and rougher features(such as more rigid water resistance or special ability for high temperature). To put it another way, the stuff we create with DLP will be more durable in real-world applications.
With further advances in technology, DLP printing is set to better serve even more applications. In fact, a few researchers are trying to apply DLP in order to print objects flexible enough that they can be used in disciplines such as medicine and electronics. How about being able to print something on a scale that would be capable of, say in the medical office or a new device?
